Daria.... I won't be soothed

Daria, remember her? Yeah, best thing ever to come out of that little network called MTV. And nothing since has been able to top it.

Too bad, MTV has such potential, but not it's a disgrace and I saw, with the end of TRL, why do they still call it MTV... Now it's full of reality TV crap. Just seriously, they should stop pretending to be a music-related. And let's not talk about the fact that you have to have a special MTV channel to actually watch music videos...

but I digress...

So yeah, Daria, if you haven't seen it, ever, you must watch it. I'm reminded of Tom. Nobody every liked him. I liked him coz really, who else would see through her? He saw through her, he was able to see Daria. And he really liked her too. Of course, out in the real world, guys seem to scamper off and chose the idiot girlfriends. They don't bother with "getting through" things anymore. I know, my complaint it's nothing new, but trust me, it feels so much better actually making the complaint.

Tom, I need a Tom in my life. And fuck all of you who think I should seek and put myself out there. Quite frankly, if they (men) are not gonna make the effort, well, neither am I.

But again, I digress....

No, no here, have a clip. It's my favorite episode. :P

Want to know me?

I have found that the best thing to do with my sad moments is to listen to music that reminds me of times I've been sadder...

My only regret (?) is to have found these only later in life and not when I really needed them. But that's ok, I still found them, they get me out of holes anyway...

They might not be the best songs or the catchiest or the most popular, but they all hold a special place in my heart and mind. They hold a power over me like no others...

P.S. It's a pure 80s party.. sorry, I'm not emo. lol

The Alternatives

(warning: overuse of the word "beautiful" ahead)
1. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

My favorite line: "I am the son, and the heir, of a shyness that is criminally vulgar"
Johny Marr and Morrissey put thoughts to songs about a state that I'm too familiar with: shyness. Shyness is a state that takes hold of you, where you can only be described as staying still: inertia. You know you want more, but you can't bring yourself to get out of it.

Special note: The only drawback of this song? Not being representative of the sound of The Smiths. But then again, maybe that's why it stays seared in my brain...

2. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

My favorite line: "Why is the bedroom so cold/Turned away on your side?"
It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and it's about a pretty "ugly" subject. I think what I love about this song (and Joy Division's music in general) most is Ian's voice. His emotions, you can hear them, his voice is beautiful and haunting, I'll never forget it.

SN: The first time I ever heard this song was not in Donnie Darko (like others on this list), but in a MTV special Moby did on his favorite music videos of all time. I have him to thank for introducing me to one of the greatest bands.

3. Echo and The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon

"Fate/ up against your will"
"In starlit nights I saw you/So cruelly you kissed me"
Another beautiful song from a band that I only know a few songs from. "The Cutter" is another. The lyrics are some of the beautiful one's I've ever heard. This one, along with song # 4 I heard from first in Donnie Darko, indeed one of the most haunting movies I've ever seen.

4. The Church - Under the Milky Way
"Leads you here despite your destination"
I think what impacted me the most about this song was its sound and its lyrics. Just a beautiful song.

5. The Cure - Hanging Garden

Along with Echo and the Bunnymen's "The Cutter", this song made an impression on me with it's sound. A driving bass, an impeccable drum with Robert Smith's voice. I think this is my favorite Cure song because it really is like nothing else I've ever heard since. This is all not mentioning the lyrics. Just an awesome song.

6. New Order - Ceremony

If you know the history behind the song, then you understand the meaning of this song. It's the bridge, the beautiful and painful bridge, between Joy Division and New Order. Although Ian Curtis did record a cut of the song, the song because, to me, like the phoenix song. This song allowed New Order to rise from the ashes of Joy Division. I love the guitar and bass on it.

7. U2 - A Celebration

"And we don't have the time/To watch the world go tumbling down"
When I first heard this song, it was long into my U2 obsession. I didn't know it at the time, but this song's pretty unique in U2's repertoire. This song doesn't sound like any other U2 song, I even think it sticks out like a sore thumb in the U2 discography. I like that, plus the video as you can see is pretty hilarious. Bono in red pants... Supposedly, the band doesn't like the song that much, but quite frankly, I don't care. It's was one of my first rare U2 song I ever got ahold of.

Espejismo

Don't go out of your way
to be this nice to me...

Don't give me hope...

Please don't be nice to me
Broken hearts
Are built with broken hope

You'll tear me apart..
You'll tear me apart with your closeness

Don't touch me like you did today
I'm too brittle to take reality
The reality of your misunderstood intentions
The misunderstanding of my traitor heart
Who is so eager
That only creates and harbors mirages

Sorry to seem so harsh
But I'm only trying to prevent
Serious pain from insignificance
And pretentious wishes
That have no home in reality

Don't be nice to me
Or I'll remember it all...

I must run away from this...
